23 SEP 2016 DEEPIKA PADUKONE 10th HIGHEST PAID ACTRESS

Deepika On Forbes’ List Of World’s Highest Paid Actresses

New York: Leading Indian actress Deepika Padukone has made her debut among the world’s top 10 highest paid actresses with earnings of USD 10 million dollars in a list alongside Hollywood heavyweights Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts and Friends star Jennifer Anniston.
Padukone, 30, is the only Indian actress and the sole newcomer in Forbes’ 2016 list of the ‘World’s Highest-Paid Actresses’, coming in on the 10th spot.
Forbes said Padukone has scored box office gold in Bollywood movies such as Bajirao Mastani and Piku. While she earns less than her Hollywood counterparts for roles, Padukone compensates with over a dozen lucrative endorsements, which have helped her hedge against a deep pay gap in Bollywood.
The list shows her with earnings of USD 10 million. Forbes said the Bangalore-bred Padukone, who made her Bollywood film debut in 2007 with Shahrukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om, has since starred in several films that have crossed the USD 150 million or 100 crore mark a barometer for box office success in India.
Padukone has also become something of a style icon launching her own label for an Indian online shopping site. Making her Hollywood debut along Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel, she will be seen in 2017 in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Noting the gender pay gap in the Indian movie industry, a discrepancy not uncommon in Hollywood also, Forbes said though a top Indian male star might earn close to USD 5 million a movie, prominent Indian actresses rarely clear USD 1 million a film.
For the second year in a row, Oscar-winning Hunger Games actress Lawrence topped the list of the world’s highest-paid actresses, notching USD 46 million. Ghostbusters starrer Melissa McCarthy is ranked second with earnings of USD 33 million. The list includes The Horse Whisperer-starrer Scarlett Johansson on the third spot, Anniston on the 4th place followed by Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (5), Oscar-nominee Amy Adams (7) and Pretty Woman-starrer Roberts (8).
Forbes added that in an industry where a pay gap with male actors still exists, 90 per cent of the world’s highest- paid actresses supplement their on-screen earnings with endorsements.
Together, the world’s 10 highest-paid actresses tallied combined USD 205 million between June 2015 and 2016, before fees and taxes. Though these select actresses earn more than most could dream of, their movie money is but a fraction of what many of their male counterparts pocket.
While top actresses can negotiate eight figure upfront fees plus a cut of profits for leading parts in big budget movies, there are simply fewer of those roles available for women, Forbes said.
It also noted that for women, the movie business is notoriously ageist but with box office clout, some of the highest-paid actresses have maneuvered themselves into positions of economic power.

If the names Fan Bingbing and Deepika Padukone don't ring a bell, they should, because the Asian stars featured in the latest ranking of the world's best-paid actresses.
Chinese starlet Fan took fifth place on the Forbes' The World's Highest-Paid Actresses 2016 list, based on her earnings from June 2015 to June 2016, down from fourth spot last year. Her $17 million 2016 paycheck came from roles in local Chinese films such as"Skiptrace" and "Lady of the Dynasty."
"Last year was the first time we actually looked outside of just the U.S., so last year Fan Bingbing was the only foreign actress to make the list. This year she's joined by Charlize Theron and Deepika Padukone," said Natalie Robehmed, a staff writer at Forbes, told CNBC's "Squawk Box."

Born in Qingdao, China, Fan rose to fame in Asia at just 17, when she played a supporting role in the popular Mandarin-language television series "My Fair Princess."
After starring in several Chinese movies and topping Forbes' China celebrity rankings, Fan broke into the global mainstream media in 2014 when she starred in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" as the mutant Blink.
She has also caught the attention of red-carpet watchers with her regal and elaborate haute couture gowns at several Cannes Film Festivals and Met Galas. The 35-year-old has also been the celebrity brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, Chopard, Loreal and Cartier.
Fan was reportedly the first Asian celebrity to wear a custom-madeLouis Vuitton gown, back in 2013, according to several reports.
Adding to her list of accomplishments, she is also a singer, television producer and philanthropist.

Newcomer Deepika Padukone joined the ranks in tenth spot, after earning $10 million in the year to June. While Padukone might be a stranger to U.S. audiences, that will likely change.
"She will be making her Hollywood debut next year so U.S. audiences may get familiar with her soon," Robehmed said, referring to the upcoming film "xXx: Return of Xander Cage."
The Bollywood actress and model received her big break starring in the 2007 blockbuster "Om Shanti Om" and romantic comedy "Piku," for which she won several awards.
While Padukone earned less than her Hollywood contemporaries for her acting roles, she earned her millions by cutting lucrative brand endorsement deals with local brands such as Indian domestic airline Vistara and jewelry brand Tanishq, Forbes reported.
Another key takeaway from the Forbes' list was the glaring gender pay gap between the actors and actresses.
"This year, the world's highest-paid actor Dwayne Johnson earned $64 million, $18 million more than Jennifer Lawrence [who was the highest-paid actress]," Robehmed told CNBC.
"There's still a very significant pay gap, even for women who are at the very top of their fields," she added.
